A stethoscope is a medical instrument used for auscultation (listening to the internal sounds of the body).


In 1816, the French physician René Théophile Hyacinthe Laennec invented the stethoscope because he was uncomfortable placing his ear on women’s chests to hear their heart beats. Here is a photograph and drawing of René Laennec’s stethoscope…
